Welcome back old and new shoalers
JUNE 3, 2010 LETTER FROM OUR NHC CONFERENCE CHAIRS, STEVE AND EDIE WHITNEY, TO ALL 2010 REGISTERED CONFEREES:
WHAT’S HAPPENING?
Our theme ,“Deep Sea Pot-Pourri,” will include timely lectures by Ric Martini Monday through Friday.
Morning Chapel, led by Charlie Close (dear friend and minister) and lay led candlelight chapel services will be held daily.
We were very surprised to be approached by the chairs of the youth conference requesting that we have intergenerational workshops again. They said this is a very important part of their conference. We will have a women’s discussion group. The men’s group will be a hands on activity, “How to pilot your plane”. Later in the week we will join together for a kazoo band under the leadership of the island music director.
Tea has been moved to Newton where we can combine afternoon tea with a fire (if it’s chilly) and some interesting programs.
How many years has it been since you’ve boated in Gosport Harbor? Gosport Regatta will be a Victorian boating party. We’ve arrange for lovely weather. We’ll have skimmer hats and parasols for you. Sign up to be a rower or sign up to be a passenger.
The Book Swap will be held early in the week so you can read the book you get during the conference. Remember to bring a book that you’ve enjoyed that you’d like someone else to have.
Pewter workshop: It’s back!!!! There will be an additional $15.00 fee for supplies for this workshop.
NHC has an extensive art workshop. Jim Locke, artist and art educator, will be available to get you involved in an art project of your choosing.
Share your list of ‘good reads’ with others. By the time we finish discussing books you will be able to create a personal reading list.
Progressive story: The writing workshop will take a new twist based on an old parlor game, “The Exquisite Corpse”. A beginning story prompt will be provided. The first person to write builds on the provided prompt. The second person writes his/her addition to the story based only on the bit written just before him/her. The result is an interesting voyage.
ISHRA has invited NHC to attend a play being produce on the island entitled “Isles of Shoals: The Eternal Sound of the Sea” presented by Pontine Theater.
The conference will gather on the west end of the porch to sing “Amazing Grace” at sunset one evening. We are planning this for Tuesday, the night of Pelican Show. We usually do not have chapel that night.
Late Night Movies (well…9:45) will all be deep sea themed movies. We need a volunteer for this. It’s an easy job! Just start the DVD.
ISHRA has organized a trip to Appledore Island. NHC has been invited to join the trip. Spaces will be limited and there will be an additional cost for this trip.
Enjoy a trip to the casino? Then the poker party is for you! This will be a no cost, time limited game. Chips will be handed out at the start of the game. The top three winners get a prize.
Become an Island Buddy. This is like secret Santa without secrets or Christmas. Put your name in the hat if you want to participate. You will be given the name of another buddy. Do something nice for your buddy each day. Get them coffee after dinner. Buy them an ice cream cone. Show them your special Star Island spot.
Want to develop a new leisure pursuit? Try geocaching. This is a GPS treasure hunt.
You may have wonderful musings to share via our conference newsletter, The Sandpiper. Joy Pearson will be happy to hear from you. jep.home@verizon.net
EXTRA THINGS TO BRING:
The art auction is back. Bring your hand crafted items or artwork to contribute to the art auction. The pewter workshop and art workshops will be back and you can work on pieces for the art auction there. Proceeds benefit the NHC scholarship fund and SIC.
Book for book swap: The book swap will be held early in the week so you will have a book to read on the porch if you participate in the book swap.
Don’t forget to pack your talent for the talent show. We need a volunteer to coordinate the talent show.
We hope your week at NHC is filled with exploration, companionship and introspection. Don’t forget to read Ellen’s acceptance letter. We’ve attached a copy. 2010 NHC Acceptance.pdf
See you on the island,
